This locomotive is one of the two Borsig-built 0–4–0WTs found by the White Forces at the Ino fort (south of Viipuri, near the border) after the Finnish Civil War in 1918. They were used in internal traffic at Ino during the construction work of the fortress and after the SVR line came near the fortification in 1915, in connecting traffic from Terijoki to Ino, also between the fortress and Ino station.
The war-booty committee used these locomotives at Ino until August 1919 when one was repaired at SVR Viipuri works and sold to Wilhelm Schauman Oy, Pietarsaari Cellulose factory in 1919.
The state railways purchased this engine in 1945 after it had become redundant at the cellulose factory. On becoming a VR engine it was numbered 68 and classified Vk4.
The engine had plate frames, a saturated steam boiler, Walschaerts valve gear using slide valves. It was equipped with steam braking. The water tank was situated within the frames below the boiler, and a very small bunker was in the cab itself. The boiler pressure was reduced from 12kg/cm2 to 11kg/cm2 under VR ownership.
Because of its minute size, the engine was never used in revenue service but spent its whole working life as the VR Kuopio works shunter. It was withdrawn in 1967 and is now preserved.
It should be noted that this is not the same engine as
previous Kuopio works shunter, which was also classified Vk4 but was a war-booty engine.
